A Brief History of Chinese Makeup

Why I Chose to Create a Handmade Lipstick

I live in southern China.
The air here is humid, the pace of life unhurried.
Over time, this environment taught me to slow down and observe—
to ask what kind of beauty can truly stay with us in everyday life.

Before I began making handmade lipsticks,
I spent a lot of time reading about the history of Chinese makeup.
The more I read, the more I realized something simple but important:
for Chinese women, beauty was never meant to be loud or overpowering.

From the Beginning, Chinese Makeup Was Gentle

For much of history, Chinese makeup came directly from nature.
Flower petals, plant roots, and natural oils
were used to create rouge and lip color.

Makeup was not about changing who you were,
but about bringing warmth to the complexion,
about looking healthy, present, and at ease.

It was a kind of beauty that never competed with one’s features—
it settled in quietly,
growing naturally over time.

The Evolution of Makeup Reflects the Way We Live

During the Han and Tang dynasties,
makeup was more expressive and free,
with fuller lip color reflecting confidence and emotion.

Later, in the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties,
makeup became softer and more restrained.
A thin layer of color was enough,
with greater attention placed on comfort and daily wear.

These shifts made one thing clear to me:
at its core, Chinese makeup has always been about
what fits into real life.

Why I Insist on Making Lipstick by Hand

Today, there are endless makeup options available.
But I wanted to create a lipstick that doesn’t rush.

It doesn’t need to impress at first glance.
It only needs to be something you can wear every day,
without burdening your lips.

That’s why I chose to make each lipstick by hand,
drawing inspiration from plant-based colors and nourishing oils—
allowing color and care to exist at the same time.

I hope this lipstick
is not something used to “correct” or “transform” anyone,
but something that quietly accompanies you through an ordinary day.

One Lipstick, A Continuation of Eastern Aesthetics

The history of Chinese makeup is long,
yet it has never left everyday life.

When you apply a handmade lipstick,
it becomes a soft form of expression—
gentle, self-possessed, and honest.

This is the Eastern beauty I hope to share with you,
through this one simple lipstick
